HoP will be back next year.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Red Scare got a scare in the Elam Ending.

The best Ohio team in The Basketball Tournament may have not been the top-seeded defending champion hosting the field.

Instead, it was the team of Dayton alums, including a few who had a chance at top seed in the 2020 NCAA Tournament ripped away from them.

After demolishing War Tampa in the first round and skating by Carmen’s Crew in the Round of 16, the Illini alums and Co. ran out of gas. House of ‘Paign’s cinderella run in its debut TBT came to an end Friday afternoon with a 83-76 loss to No. 8 Red Scare.

Red Scare kept up the defensive intensity throughout the first half, but HoP didn’t do itself any favors en route to a 38-32 deficit at the break. House of ‘Paign turned the ball over 10 times in the first half, but more critically only shot 1-of-8 from behind the arc.

In potentially his final game with House of ‘Paign, Mike Daum put on a show again. The NBA prospect scored 12 points and had four rebounds, and was arguably the best player on the court once again. The South Dakota State alum was a terrific pickup by Mike LaTulip in House of ‘Paign’s first tournament, even if he was limited in HoP’s lone loss. Former DePaul star Billy Garrett, Jr. had 13 points for HoP.

Former Illini Andres Feliz and Malcolm Hill never were able to get it going in their third game in seven days, but Michael Finke, who ended his career at Grand Canyon, had a pair of corner threes and finished with eight points. Feliz grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds and had 17 points, most of them coming late and in the Elam Ending.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED

SLOPPY START: House of ‘Paign’s bad first quarter was highlighted by a ton of turnovers, including three from Andres Feliz. It allowed Red Scare to get into transition and build an early 22-17 lead.

THE GROCE QUARTER: Did you miss watching John Groce basketball? Although his style of play worked this season in the MAC, it would’ve been hard to tell if he wasn’t on the sideline during the second quarter when HoP couldn’t get a bucket to fall or work its way toward the rim, falling behind by as many as 10 points.

ELAM ENDING: HoP was down by a ton of points (74-55) entering the Elam Ending, but that didn’t matter. The Illini guys kept fighting back once Red Scare got to 80 to give themselves a shot.

Back again on Friday.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — It shouldn’t be legal to have these flurries of emotion in July.

The Illin— err, House of ‘Paign waltzed into Columbus, Ohio and dethroned the reigning champs — this year’s TBT No. 1 seed — Carmen’s Crew, 76-68, in dramatic fashion on Wednesday afternoon.

Despite a slow start for both House of ‘Paign and Carmen’s Crew, it was evident from the jump that this wasn’t going to be your typical 1 vs. 16 matchup. HoP took a 10-9 lead into the first media timeout thanks to a pair of Malcolm Hill & Nnanna (yes, Nnanna) Egwu threes, but neither team seemed was settled in. Mike LaTulip’s squad put together a solid run to bust open a multi-possession lead right before the end of the first quarter, 19-15.

HoP kept the hot shooting alive in the second with Andres Feliz (15 points, 8 rebounds) and Central Connecticut alum Kyle Vinales also cashing in from deep. They would build a lead as large as 11 before Carmen’s Crew went on a 24-8 run to end the half. The ever-pesky Jon Diebler spearheaded the turn of the tide with a solo six-point possession, and former Illini and Carmen’s Crew reserve Demetri McCamey knocking down a couple three-pointers of his own.

In a back-and-forth third quarter, it was productive bench minutes from Michael Finke and Kyle Vinales (16 points) that proved to be the difference. LaTulip made it a priority to get to the rim because HoP ramped up the aggressiveness and took a 58-56 edge into the final quarter.

Trailing by one with a minute until the Elam Ending, HoP followed up with a Hill layup and Mike Daum (23 points, 8 rebounds) three to jump ahead 68-64 and give this Round of 16 matchup a target score of 76. It was all HoP from that point out. Vinales added six in stoppage time, Daum hammered one home baseline, and then, it was Vinales again that gave House of ‘Paign the game-winning floater and moved the Illinois alumni onto the next round, 76-68.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED

THE ENTIRE THIRD QUARTER: After getting off to that big lead early in the first half, HoP went into the ‘locker rooms’ trailing. But House of ‘Paign went on a 15-2 run in third, carrying a lead into the fourth.

DAUMINATION: Down 64-63 with about five minutes left, House of ‘Paign turned to its big guns to take the lead into the Elam Ending. Andres Feliz led a transition bucket by Malcolm Hill, and Mike Daum hit a three-pointer right before the 4-minute mark to give HoP a 68-64 lead.

House of ‘Paign has The Tournament’s defending champs — and many familiar faces — up next.

House of ‘Paign advanced to the second round of The Basketball Tournament after Saturday night’s resounding 76-53 win over War Tampa. Former Illini Malcolm Hill & Andres Feliz shined for HoP, but it was non-Illini Mike Daum who was clearly the best player on the floor. The South Dakota State alum tallied 21 points and 13 boards for HoP and demonstrated why he was one of the best college players of his era.

This is a loaded squad consisting mainly of former Ohio State Buckeye stars of the past decade, with one very notable exception — more on that in a sec. At least we won’t have any Matt Sylvester flashbacks.

Who Are They?

Carmen’s Crew is named after “Carmen Ohio,” a song first performed by the Ohio State men’s glee club in 1903. Led by Head Coach Jared Sullinger, Carmen’s Crew upset 4-time defending TBT champions Overseas Elite to win The Basketball Tournament in 2019.

As a result of that victory Carmen’s Crew received the top seed in this year’s field, a first-round bye, and the right to play on their home court in Columbus (which also worked out as a terrific place to hold a fully quarantined tournament in a bubble).

Sullinger is back this summer as the team’s Head Coach/GM.

Key Players

William Buford donned a Buckeye uniform from 2008-12 and was one of the most consistent performers of the Thad Matta era. Buford finished his career 10 points shy of 2,000 and averaged 38.5% from three-point distance. The Basketball Tournament named Buford as its MVP in 2019.

Aaron Craft played in 148 games during his four seasons in Columbus. Only four? Can’t be true...

I mean, Aaron Craft tormented Illinois for like 9 seasons so it's only fitting we get the chance to knock the snot out of him in a couple days...
— Room of ‘Paign (@Champaign_Room) July 5, 2020

Craft is a tenacious defender — he made the Big Ten All-Defensive Team each season and was twice the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year — and a highly intelligent player who always seemed to make the right play at the right time for the Buckeyes. Craft is Ohio State’s all-time leader in steals (337) and was named to Big Ten Network’s All-Decade Team. He’s the archetype of the guy you love having on your team but hate playing against. Craft was playing in Italy before COVID-19 suspended the season.

Jon Diebler was a teammate of both Buford & Craft and also a member of Carmen’s Crew in 2019. The 6-foot-6 wing was a marksman from long range, sinking nearly 42% of his three-point shots during his days with the Buckeyes, including an astonishing 50.2% (114-of-227) in 2010-11. Diebler made 374 triples at Ohio State...and only attempted 209 two-point shots. House of ‘Paign absolutely need to keep tabs on Diebler throughout this game.

One of the most underappreciated Illini players of recent memory, it will be jarring to see Demetri McCamey squaring off against the Orange & Blue. The Chicago-area native finished seventh in Illini history with 1,718 points, and fifth all-time in threes with 236. We also know that McCamey can dish the ball — his 733 assists are second only to Bruce Douglas (765) in program history.

McCamey’s Ohio State connection? In addition to playing with Carmen’s Crew last season, he was also a high school teammate of former Buckeye & 2010 National Player of the Year Evan Turner.

And in only three seasons with Ohio State, Deshaun Thomas registered the ninth-most points in school history (1,628). The 6-foot-7 forward averaged nearly 20 ppg during the 2012-13 campaign, and Thomas’ 731 points is the the third-best single-season total for a Buckeye. Thomas was chosen by san Antonio in the second round of the 2013 NBA Draft but failed to make the active roster. He’s spent most of his pro career overseas, including the past two seasons with Greek club Panathinaikos BC.

No team has had a larger margin of victory so far in TBT than House of ‘Paign last week, but they’ll need to be even better if they want to score the upset here.

Carmen’s Crew is loaded. It’s an experienced, tournament-tested group that has played a lot together. HoP needs to keep up the intensity, play smart, and — most importantly — make buckets to keep this game competitive.

Carmen’s Crew are rightfully the favorites and have most of last year’s title team intact. House of ‘Paign will have its hands full.

Let’s hope Mike LaTulip has prepared a great gameplan; he’ll likely need one.

Thank you, House of ‘Paign.

If you told me on New Year’s Day that one of the most fun nights I would have in 2020 by July 4 would come while I sit on my couch watching a basketball team coached by Mike LaTulip, not really sure how I would respond. That sounds ridiculous.

But 2020 has been a ridiculous year in so many ways — and you would’ve been right.

It’s been nearly four months since the coronavirus pandemic became something really real for all of us in the United States, putting most of our life on hold for an indefinite amount of time. And as we’ve all worked to adjust, I’ve had good days, but I wouldn’t say life has been full of fun.

Except for Saturday night, which happened to be Independence Day. And typically I’d be out and about and watching fireworks and doing literally anything except watching whatever mid-summer programming ESPN is showing. But this year, in our ‘new normal,’ that was exactly the case, and thankfully we had a rooting interest.

That’s all I really have to say. It’s hard to put happiness into words sometimes, especially in a time like now. But there’s something nostalgic about seeing Malcolm and Leron again on the court. And to see Andres Feliz get one more shot at this after his team never got the chance in March. And to be able to root for someone new, like Mike Daum. And seeing them survive and advance, it’s just fun, in a time when there isn’t too much fun to go around.

So, thank you to House of ‘Paign for participating. Thank you to Mike LaTulip for putting it together. Thank you to the guys for playing out for the Orange and Blue. And thank you to Illini Nation for appreciating the moment and what we’re watching and enjoying it.

One day we will all be back together in Memorial Stadium and State Farm Center. Brad Underwood, according to Dan Dakich, will weigh 26 fewer pounds. And we will put our arms around each other for the Alma Mater and clap along to the Three In One.

That day isn’t today. It’s not tomorrow. And it likely isn’t very soon at all.

Doesn’t really matter right now, though.

As long as we have House of ‘Paign, I think we’ll be able to have some fun.

If you want to chip in and financially support their team, you can find a link to their GoFundMe here.
