We are basically a triple-option team now guys.

Oh poor Rutgers, we know how you feel. Especially since this game was almost the reverse of last season’s ILLINUTGERS match-up when, in 2017, Rutgers beat Illinois handily on the road behind a great rushing performance. Illinois also won this game with less than 90 passing yards, while Rutgers barely crossed 100 in 2017.

We are either returning to normalcy or entering the twilight zone. You decide.

As always, I’m not going over every single stat. You can do that yourself here.

Team Stats of Note

Illinois had 419 total yards compared to 386 for Rutgers. When first looking at the total yards I was a bit shocked it was that close. Sure, Illinois had three interceptions which helped, but there is no way that Rutgers was that close to us on offense, and it turns out they weren’t.

Illinois gained 6.8 yards per play, compared to Rutgers at 5.1. Rutgers just had the ball for much longer in this game. They ran 76 plays compared to 62 for Illinois. However, Rutgers barely won the TOP battle (30:57). Illinois slowed the pace down a lot in this game. The Illini’s usual fast-paced offense ran a play every 28 seconds on average, below the usual pace. Perhaps this was because Illinois had the lead, or maybe ball control as a strategy for this game. Either way, it was notable for Rod Smith’s offense.

Rutgers also happened to have more first downs than the Illini (25 to 17). Rutgers was able to move the ball some, but a lot of that was taken right way.

Yeah, Art Sitkowski is kinda bad, but he still had some success

Sitkowski had three interceptions in this game, all which were on bad throws stemming from poor decisions. He tried to throw an impossible ball into tight coverage which Jartavius “Quan” Martin was able to get to for his third interception of the year. Del’Shawn Phillips also later picked up his third interception on a ball thrown right to him. Nate Hobbs picked up his first of the year late in the fourth quarter.

Illinois is now one of only three teams with multiple players with three or more interceptions.

Illinois, Oregon and North Texas are the only teams in the nation with multiple players with 3+ interceptions.

Illinois (Jartavius Martin, Del'Shawn Phillips) and Oregon have two and North Texas has three.
— Illini Stats & Notes (@IlliniStats) October 7, 2018

Illinois’ defense deserves credit. They played good coverage down the field and didn’t make mistakes to get these picks. However, Sitkowski wasn’t heavily pressured on these throws. He had a clean pocket on many and just made a boneheaded throw. It can happen with freshman.

Illinois has 10 interceptions this season. Holy crap, that’s amazing for the Illini. Luck plays a role as it always does with turnovers, so thanks to the turnover fairy, but also thanks to Phillips and Martin.

Illinois needs to figure out its pass rush — and soon

At times, Sitkowski found ways to move the ball. He finished 29/46 (63%) for 267 yards and 1 TD. His touchdown came on a drive late in the second quarter for Rutgers where he went 9-9 for 79 yards. He was under absolutely no pressure and was essentially allowed to run a 7-on-7 two minute drill.

There is bend-but-don’t-break, and then there is letting a team easily march down the field on you. Illinois needs to find a way to be more disruptive going forward. Illinois only had one sack in this game from Tymir Oliver, and three QB hits. Isaiah Gay was ineffective only making one tackle. Roundtree was quiet though he did get 1 TFL. Jamal Milan and Kenyon Jackson were unremarkable.

This just needs to get better. Illinois can’t expect to give better QBs — especially ones who are threats at running the ball — this much time and have any success on defense. There have been calls from fans for more blitzing, but that isn’t going to happen for two reasons. One, Lovie doesn’t do it. Two, Del’Shawn Phillips and Jake Hansen are not good blitzers.

This is quite frankly a situation where Illinois just needs the defense line to step it the hell up or teams like Purdue may put up some crazy numbers against the Illini.

Born to run

Illinois only threw for 89 yards in this game, but it didn’t matter because the Illini running game was cooking. Illinois ran for 330 yards at 7.7 yards per carry and 4 TDs. That is pure domination on the ground that we haven’t seen from Illinois in a long time. The player of the game for me, Reggie Corbin, only needed 11 carries to get 137 yards.

Bush was the key to this. I’ve long said that this Rod Smith system needs a QB who can run, and Bush did more than just that. He led the team in carries with 18 for 116 yards including sacks. His threat kept Rutgers’ from selling out on the handoffs, and opened up some huge plays. Illinois had three TDs of 40 yards or more from three different players (AJ Bush 41 yards, Reggie Corbin 73 yards, Mike Epstein 41 yards). Reggie Corbin also had a 52 yard run as well.

The improvement of the running game cannot be overstated.

Illinois may not be able to pass well, but they can run, and that is helping the Illini finally establish an offensive identity. Build the Rod Smith statue now.

Can anyone besides Trenard Davis please get open?

Trenard Davis had an ok day with 5 catches for 59 yards, but he was the only Illini WR to make a real impact on this game. Ricky Smalling caught the touchdown, but only caught one other pass on the day. Carmoni Green dropped what may have been a touchdown catch.

In total the WRs combined for only 10 catches for 89 yards and the Ricky Smalling TD. This isn’t all their fault. The pass blocking is still lacking. Bush was sacked twice despite only throwing the ball 18 times, but he was also forced to scramble on many a pass play. Bush’s slow, funky release doesn’t help much either, but right now Illinois doesn’t have someone that can do what Mike Dudek could do, get open quick.

Perhaps a big bodied TE like Lou Dorsey could help, but he didn’t play a single snap in this game. He appears to be in the doghouse of the coaching staff right now, but if Illinois wants to get something out of this anemic passing attack in order to move the ball against the far superior defenses left on their schedule, they may need to take him off the leash.

Nice rebound game for the Run Defense

Illinois only let Rutgers gain 119 yards on the ground at 4.0 yards per carry. Besides the early 32-yard touchdown from Jonathan Hilliman, the running game was effectively held at bay.

How much of this was the return of Jamal Milan? How much was real improvement? How much was it that Rutgers is just terrible, flat out awful on offense? We’ll find out soon.

It still is only Rutgers

We’ll have to wait and see what this good performance has to say about the rest of the Illini season, but if S&P is right on this, it won’t be much. Illinois only jumped up one spot in the S&P rankings this week (now 100, were 101 out of 130).

Illinois may still be a bad team, just not the worst in the Big Ten.

Mostly high marks for the Illini, ending their Big Ten hoodoo.

Illinois exorcised the Big Ten demons with a 38-17 road victory at the State University of New Jersey on Saturday. A solid performance across the board calls for a largely positive report card, though this review committee still sees room for improvement in several areas.

A.J. Bush: B

The grading pencil may have written in and erased both a plus and a minus next to this mark before settling on the solid B for the generally above average performance. While 89 yards passing, with 4.9 yards per attempt, don’t typically draw much praise at the quarterback position, Bush added 116 yards on the ground and three total touchdowns to balance out his score sheet.

Many of his biggest runs came on third down, including his electric 41-yard scamper in the first half that put the Illini up two scores.

Bush will need to calibrate his pocket clock moving forward, and practice with some hot potatoes this week, as he held the ball too long on multiple occasions. But his third and long, back-shoulder strike to Ricky Smalling sealed the victory for the Orange and Blue (not to mention that he had a long, accurate touchdown pass dropped on him late in the first half that would have effectively buried the Scarlet Knights before the break).

Bush may be more of a game-manager than game-changer, and the early lead solidified this status Saturday. However, his size, toughness, athleticism and patience as a runner make him a perfect game closer against bruised, tired defenses.

Rushing Game: A+

Another week, another impressive effort for the Illini backfield behind an equally impressive effort by the offensive line. No need to overuse the lightning and thunder backfield duo cliche with Mike Epstein and Reggie Corbin, as both continue to show individual flash and boom. A clean, combined 200 yards on an even 20 carries with a touchdown a piece will keep the Illini combo near the top of the Big Ten in yards per carry.

No big plays in the passing game, you say? No need against Rutgers, as the run game hit for big plays of 73 (Corbin), 41 (Epstein), and 41 (Bush). If #LovieBall is the subject, Rod Smith is at the top of his class, creating dynamic scoring plays sans the turnover risks of throwing the football downfield. Certainly, M.J. Rivers has looked to have the stronger, more accurate arm this year, but the coaching staff knows that this offense makes its money on the ground, leaving little doubt that A.J. Bush was the right call under center following the bye week.

Defense: B+

Another good—not great—mark here for a unit that was largely successful executing the Lovie game plan of waiting back, rallying to the ball, and forcing turnovers. The pressure on Art Sitkowski was inconsistent and the group tackling sharpness briefly departed the Illini during the long, end of first half Rutgers touchdown drive. But Illinois contained the Scarlet Knights’ run game, forcing Sitkowski into several long yardage throws on third and fourth down.

The Illini were opportunistic, and took advantage of wayward throws from Rutgers’ true freshman signal caller to the tune of three interceptions.

Individually, Del’Shawn Phillips and Jake Hansen flew around the field, making constant contributions against the run and pass. Owen Carney, Jr. shined up front, providing much needed heat on Sitkowski, right as the Rutgers QB appeared to be getting into a throwing rhythm. Carney finished with a pair of quarterback hurries to go along with a pass deflection and two individual tackles.

The defensive backfield limited big plays, allowing only two completions over 20 yards, one of which being the fluky, deflected 28-yard grab by Bo Melton late in the second half. Moreover, the Illinois defenders averaged more yards per reception (9) on three picks than Rutgers pass-catchers (5.8) on 29 attempts.

Special Teams: C+

When you’re used to excellence, you cannot be surprised to get a slightly disappointing grade when mistakes are made. Chase McLauglin split his field goal attempts, with his miss coming from a deep 48 yards. But Illini nation has come to expect near perfection from the kicker who led the FBS in makes from 40 plus and 50 plus yards entering Saturday’s contest. It also came as a shock to see kickoffs actually returned by an opponent for positive yardage.

Additionally, a missed chance to down a punt and pin Rutgers at their own goal line could have stopped the late first half Scarlet Knights’ scoring drive before it even began. And the Illini caught a break when Carlos Sandy fell on his own muffed punt, which could have shifted momentum back to Rutgers had they recovered. To his credit, though, Sandy has otherwise been mistake free, playing a massive role in the Illini return game as a true freshman.

With Illinois winning both the total yardage and turnover battles against a struggling Scarlet Knights group, the special teams could afford to play hooky in this one. However, with winnable games against more competent opponents upcoming, the Illini’s best unit will need to win special teams on a regular basis moving forward.

Rutgers is bad, but Illinois did what it needed to win.

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights are bad at football this year. Worst team in the Big Ten.

That being said, Illinois ran the ball very well, and the defense made some nice stops on its way to a 38-17 win.

There's plenty of positives to take away, but some bad as well:

Illinois chugs along with the running game.

It was good to see AJ Bush healthy again, if only for the fact he's a more effective option in the run game than MJ Rivers.

It was more of the same for the story of the season for Illinois so far. The offensive line opened up holes, and the talented backs did exactly what they were supposed to do. The Illini bludgeoned their beaks, and ran roughshod on Rutgers, accruing over 300 yards on the ground.

Reggie Corbin led the way with almost 150 yards and a touchdown, followed by Bush with 116 and two more scores. Bush now has two of the best rushing games by a quarterback at Illinois since Juice Williams was leading the team.

Granted, it was Rutgers, but Illinois did what it needed to offensively—and say what you want about Bush's passing (and I will)—but he adds an extra element running the football with his speed.

The defense did what it does: Take away the football.

There seems to be somewhat of an identity to Lovie Smith's defense this year. It's not a pretty defense by any means. A better team would have made it closer. Takeaways, though, have been the saving grace.

It seems like every time the Illini need a turnover, they get a fortuitous bounce or a nice play on the ball. That was Lovie's calling card in the NFL. It's starting to establish itself here as well.

The Fighting Illini won the turnover battle 3-0, and Rutgers quarterback Artur Sitkowski was more than happy to gift Illinois some truly awful interceptions. That's the easiest interception Del'Shawn Phillips will ever get.

(Sorry if this sounds like piling on, Rutgers fans, but your team is bad and you know it.)

The tackling was also much improved, as the defensive secondary was shuffled around playing Sydney Brown and Tony Adams at safety, Cam Watkins and freshman Jartavius Martin at corner with Delano Ware at nickel. Brown especially looked physical and sound at the back end and Martin has played well.

I expect Purdue to be better schematically, but it was encouraging to see Illinois defenders wrap up and lay the wood on an inferior team. Refreshingly so.

Wide receiver, where are you?

If Illinois can't get guys open in the passing game, it's going to be tough sledding throwing the football going forward.

No separation from anyone, except Trenard Davis (unsung hero of the game). Ricky Smalling had a tough day at the office too, although he did once again make a tremendous catch on a back shoulder throw for a touchdown.

Sam Mays, Dominic Stampley, Carmoni Green: You have to create some space for yourselves. Or the scheme does. Or we need to recruit the hell out of the position.

It also didn't help that AJ Bush had a pretty terrible passing day. He takes too long to get the football out. He's a one-read quarterback. He'd be better off tucking the ball if his first read isn't there (thanks for the quote, Thumpasaurus).

He isn't your typical pocket passer, but he doesn't need to be. Run the football and limit the mistakes and he'll be okay. Receivers need to catch the ball as well. It's going to be scary if Illinois faces a loaded box and can't throw at all, which teams will do until AJ proves he can get in a rhythm passing.

Where were Lou Dorsey and Nate Hobbs?

Hobbs got in late and made a nice play on the game-sealing interception, as well as a hard tackle in the backfield, forcing Rutgers to settle for a late field goal.

Where was Lou Dorsey, though? You're telling me he's not better than a true freshman across the middle of the field? Poppycock. Maybe it's an attitude issue, or something else, but it seems like you should always play your best players, even if they are shaking off the rust.

I think I speak for Illinois fans that we'll take 38 points and a must-win road game victory. There are still things that need to shoring up though if the Illini are going to beat Purdue next week on Homecoming. Progress comes in baby steps for this program, however.

The Illini toppled the Knights for Illinois’ first conference win in 700 days.

The streak is over.

After 700 days without a Big Ten victory, Illinois pounded Rutgers, 38-17, on Saturday afternoon at HighPoints Solution Stadium in Piscataway, New Jersey. The conference win is Lovie Smith’s third in 20 tries over three years as Illinois’ head coach, and the Illini’s first since defeating Michigan State on Nov. 5, 2016.

Illinois (3-2, 1-1 Big Ten) built its first Big Ten win in 100 weeks on a 10-point halftime lead, yet the streak looked as if it would continue after Jon Hilliman’s 32-yard touchdown run pushed Rutgers ahead with five minutes remaining in the first quarter.

That’s when Illinois ran for a trio of scores over a nine-minute span, opened by a pair of rushing touchdowns from grad transfer quarterback AJ Bush, who made his first start since the second game of the season after being sidelined with a hamstring injury. Tailback Reggie Corbin followed Bush’s second score—a 41-yard scramble—with a 73-yard TD midway through the second quarter, giving Illinois a 24-7 lead.

But Rutgers freshman quarterback Art Sitkowski rallied a late Rutgers score on a 9-for-9 passing drive to close the first half with just a 10-point deficit. The error-prone freshman also aided Illinois’ defense by tossing three interceptions—his ninth, 10th and 11th on the season—to set Illinois up for 10 points.

The Scarlet Knights (1-5, 0-3 Big Ten), who have lost five straight games after beating Texas State to open a 2018 campaign with increased expectations, received the ball to open the second half, and continued driving down the field, only to have their possession ended on a shanked 47-yard field goal attempt by backup kicker Gavin Haggerty.

Sitkowski led one more late drive midway through the fourth quarter, but Rutgers was forced to settle for a field goal after a pair of incomplete passes and tackle behind the line of scrimmage by Nate Hobbs inside the five-yard line.

Illinois secured its first conference game with more than 30 points on Ricky Smalling’s touchdown catch early in the fourth quarter—Bush’s first Illinois touchdown pass. The Illini had not scored 30 points since defeating Michigan State, 31-27, in 2016. Illinois has scored at least 30 points in three of its five games this season, tying its most such games in a season since 2013.

Mike Epstein added one more touchdown for Illinois on a 41-yard run on the first play from scrimmage after Rutgers failed an attempt on an onside kick.

Moments that Mattered

Bush scoop and score: It wasn’t the prettiest way to score his first touchdown as an Illini, but Bush recorded his first points of the season with a late rushing score in the first quarter. Bush fumbled the initial snap, but recovered and ran for the two-yard touchdown, giving Illinois a 10-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Bush really could not throw the ball too well, finishing with just 10 completions for 89 yards, but his ability to take care of the ball and manage the game was more than enough for the Illini victory.

Scrambling on 2nd-and-long: In Bush’s big day on the ground, no run may have been bigger than a 14-yard run on the 2nd-and-18 late in the third quarter. Bush’s rush made his first-down completion on 3rd-and-4 manageable, and led to Smalling’s touchdown early in the fourth.

Hobbs Pick: Illinois clinched the victory with a late interception of Sitkowski, via Hobbs. It is the 19th straight game that Illinois forced a turnover (a la #LovieBall).

Mike Epstein gets his Gym, Tan, Laundry on in Dirty Jerz.

Quarterback

Week Winner - Dwayne Haskins, Ohio State v. Indiana

Ohio State needed a thrilling 4th quarter comeback to knock off Penn State, the stiffest test standing in their way from a College Football Playoff. Some teams could have a hangover, but coming home to face Indiana in an afternoon game should catch the Buckeyes attention, and with that, their best shot. Haskins is an incredible player at the helm of an incredibly talented offense, and he’s gonna be slinging it. Prediction - 340 yards, 4 TDs.

Bench ‘Em - Clayton Thorson, Northwestern v. Michigan State

Thorson, or more acutely, Thorson’s knee, isn’t being trusted to run. Without that, he’s an average passer with decent weapons. Squaring off against a very good Michigan State defense, that isn’t going to equate to an exciting day in fantasy.

Keep an Eye on - Peyton Ramsey, Indiana v. Ohio State

Ramsey is going to do his best to keep pace with Haskins and the Ohio State offense. The Buckeye defense has yet to be as a good as the sum of its parts, and is vulnerable on the ground by an opportunistic quarterback. Ramsey has pretty good wheels, and is going to be watching the tape of Trace McSorley running for a career high 175 yards last week.

Running Back

Week Winner - JK Dobbins, Ohio State v. Indiana

Dobbins has once again broke away from Mike Weber, and is getting starters carries and targets. Last week Dobbins was equally dangerous on the ground as he was in the passing game, and is opening up and already outstanding game. The Indiana defense isn’t anything to write home about, and Dobbins should be part of the Buckeye offensive explosion, and probably punches a couple in. Prediction - 130 yards rushing, 40 yards receiving, 2 total TDs

Bench ‘Em - Stevie Scott, Indiana v. Ohio State

The Ohio State defense took Miles Sanders out of last weeks game, and should focus even further into stopping Scott, because the Indiana offense doesn’t have nearly as many weapons as Penn State. Meyer knows if he can stop Scott, this one won’t be competitive.

Keep an Eye on - Mike Epstein, Illinois v. Rutgers

The Illini rushing game keeps coming along, improving with each week. This should be the first week with AJ Bush back behind center, and the reigns are off of Mike Epstein in what could be the make-or-break game to Lovie Smith’s career at Illinois to this point.

Wide Receiver

Week Winner - Stanley Morgan, Nebraska v. Wisconsin

The younger JD Speillman is starting to assert himself as Nebraska’s best receiver, and should receive additional attention from the Wisconsin defense. With them being honest, and Nebraska likely being behind, it’s a good time for the senior Morgan to pile up the yards. Prediction - 135 receiving yards, 1 TD.

Bench ‘Em - Tyler Johnson, Minnesota v. Iowa

Iowa is much like the Patriots, they’re going to do everything in their power to make sure you can’t beat them with your no. 1 option. Tyler Johnson is options 1-3 for the Minnesota offense, and will probably see double coverage all day long, with possibly even a press and an safety over the top.

Keep an Eye on - Ricky Smalling, Illinois v. Rutgers

Like Epstein, AJ Bush should open up huge opportunities for Smalling against a Rutgers defense that was abused by Kansas and Buffalo. He hasn’t had his breakout yet, but it’s coming, he’s too good not to have a 140 and 2 game up his sleeve.

Tight End

Week Winner - Noah Fant, Iowa v. Minnesota

I didn’t know what to do last week with Iowa on bye. Welcome back, Noah, go have a day. Prediction - 85 receiving yards, 1 TD.

Bench ‘Em - Lou Dorsey, Illinois v. Rutgers

Illinois needs to get Lou Dorsey more involved, but it’s been a struggle so far with his suspension and return last week. Daniel Barker is going to be a solid player, but Dorsey is one of the best players on the team and he hasn’t seen the ball.

Keep an Eye on - Jake Ferguson, Wisconsin v. Nebraska

The Nebraska defense isn’t very good and is especially soft from the seams, Ferguson is going to exploit that this week, and is continuing to grow into the next really good Wisconsin tight end.

Defense of the Week - Iowa v. Minnesota

If Iowa can take Tyler Johnson out of the picture, this is going to be a fantastically ugly contest.
