Illinois drops in AP Top 25 poll after losing to Maryland

Back to work this week.

Nearly everyone in the AP Top 11 — from Purdue to Marquette — lost a game last week. Illinois was no different.

While the Illini held off Michigan State on Thursday at State Farm Center, it was a different story in an ugly shooting and defensive performance Sunday afternoon against Maryland.

As a result, the Illini dropped to No. 14 in the new AP poll on Monday. Illinois was at No. 10 last week.

We’ll never know how high the Illini (12-4, 3-2 Big Ten) could have flew if they had won on Sunday, but if there’s anything we learned last week, anything can happen any given week.

On paper, this week is a bit easier, with Illinois traveling to Big Ten bottom feeder Michigan on Thursday, before it looks for the season sweep over Rutgers on Sunday at home.

Also notable this week: Terrence Shannon Jr.’s first court hearing in Douglas Co., Kansas. That hearing may tell us more about the chance that he plays for Illinois again this season.
