Just two weeks after the football season has ended for the Illini, they continue to bulk up the defensive line.
On Saturday afternoon, Auburn defensive lineman Encyce Sledge announced on his socials that he will be transferring to Illinois.
The former three-star recruit chose Illinois over eight other transfer destinations, most notably Oregon State and UTSA.
Sledge only played 15 total snaps over two years with the Tigers, but his presence may prove to be essential for a line that needs to fill the gaping holes that the NFL Draft departures of Johnny Newton (All-American) and Keith Randolph Jr. (All-Big Ten) are leaving.
Sledge’s addition isn’t the only one that will attempt to fill their role. His transfer news gives Illinois its third defensive lineman add in the past few weeks, joining Yale graduate transfer Clay Patterson and top JUCO edge rusher Daniel Brown.
Head coach Bret Bielema even hinted at Sledge’s news minutes before the announcement.
