Ayo Dosunmu named USA Today Player of the Year

The superlatives keep coming.

NCAA Basketball: Illinois at Penn State Matthew OHaren-USA TODAY Sports

Not even 24 hours after being named a First Team All-American by the Associated Press, Ayo Dosunmu has been selected as USA Today Men’s Basketball Player of the Year.

“The do-everything guard was an electrifying force for the Fighting Illini this year in propelling them to an NCAA Tournament No. 1 seed,” Scott Gleeson of USA Today wrote Wednesday. The 6-foot-5 junior guard was picked ahead of Oklahoma State freshman phenom Cade Cunningham, who the Illini could match up with in the Sweet 16, and Iowa’s Luka Garza.

Among other accolades, Dos is also a semifinalist for Naismith Player of the Year as well as a finalist for Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year and a finalist for the Oscar Robertson Trophy, which is awarded by the United States Baketball Writers Association (USBWA) to the country’s most outstanding college basketball player.

Ayo & the Fighting Illini’s quest for the national title starts Friday against the Drexel Dragons. I-L-L!
