Twice in one day, and four times in one week.
Illinois keeps getting Florida kids, this time with three-star safety Joriell Washington, who committed to the Fighting Illini via Twitter on Friday afternoon.
A native of Fort Myers, Washington is ranked as the 99th-best safety in the 2021 class. He committed to Illinois just hours after 3-star athlete Theodore Lockley made his decision.
He told 247 that he was impressed by how well he hit it off with the coaching staff: “We just bonded really well. Everything was good. We laughed, talked. Just everything ... Every now and then it was about recruiting, but sometimes it was just so fun and energetic. That was the stuff that I loved and got to me.”
The Illini are making a concerted effort to shore up the back end of the defensive unit. Washington is the tenth commitment for the class of 2021 and the sixth recruit from Florida.
Of course, no position on Illinois’ roster is incredibly deep for the future, but one of the better ones may end up being the defensive backfield. That means when the 6-foot-2, 178 pound safety arrives in Champaign next year, he definitely should have a chance to get his feet under him.
But with that kind of size and being nationally ranked the way he is, you have to love this pickup as well.
And, hey, if Illinois isn’t working for Lovie and Co., then why not Florida?
