The Illinois softball team traveled to Waco, Texas for the Baylor Invitational over the weekend. The Illini collected 1-0 wins over both Texas State and Tulsa and lost a pair of games to tournament host Baylor. The Illini move to 7-5 on the season.

In the first game of Friday’s doubleheader, Illinois shutout Texas State in the first meeting between the two programs. Sophomore Addy Jarvis had an excellent outing in the circle, allowing just one hit and recording a season-high 11 strikeouts in 6.1 innings. Junior Bella Loya had her first home run of the season come in the second inning, which was all the offense the Illini needed in their 1-0 victory over the Bobcats.

Illinois faced Baylor in their second game of the day. It was a nail-biter, as no runs were scored until the sixth inning. Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week, Delaney Rummell, put the Illini on the board when she drove in junior Waco native, Rhein Trochim. The Bears responded in the bottom of the inning, using three errors by Illinois to their advantage and scoring five unearned runs. All of the runs were scored in the sixth inning, resulting in a 5-1 loss to the host team.

Illinois secured another 1-0 win on Saturday when it faced Tulsa. The only run was scored in the fourth inning when Rummell scored on Loya’s RBI double. Sophomore Sydney Sickels pitched a complete game, allowing three hits and striking out one.

The Illini wrapped up the weekend with another game against Baylor. Hits from Rummell, Loya, and sophomore Danielle Davis put the Illini up 1-0 in the first inning, but the Bears tied it up in the bottom. In the third inning, Davis’ home run scored three. Baylor answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning and a solo home run in the sixth. In the circle for six innings, Jarvis gave up six hits in the 5-4 loss.

Next weekend, Illinois travels to Fullerton, Cali. for the Judi Garman Classic on Feb. 27-29. The Illini will take on Cal Poly, BYU, Colorado State, Fresno State, and host Cal State Fullerton.
