The Bret Bielema era has officially began and with it comes the announcement that Rod Smith will not be a part of the next era of Illini football.
We had a lead on this developing story Monday evening and on Monday Night Smith announced on his twitter account that his time at Illinois had come to an end.
Smith said in his tweet, “I want to especially thank Lovie Smith for opportunity to be a part of his staff.”
Smith has spent the last three years as the Illini offensive coordinator — with Illinois having a top rushing offense in the Big Ten in two of those three seasons.
He also mentioned a dream of his is to be a head coach — and he got that opportunity in the interim this weekend.
Bielema will be looking to bring in a new offensive coordinator and strength and conditioning coach as Lou Hernandez will also be leaving the team, according to a source.
