You’re not going to have seen anything like this Illinois offensive line ever before.
It’s full of not just big — they’re huge — bodies, and Phifer Griffin is adding to that, signing with the Illini during the Early Signing Period.
The offensive tackle is a native of Monroe, North Carolina, and played his high school ball at Union Academy. He’s 6-foot-6 and 290 pounds, and one of three offensive lineman in the Illini’s 2020 class currently. Griffin was all-conference each of his sophomore, junior and senior seasons at Union.
247 says Griffin is a three-star prospect, and the offer list isn’t overly impressive (East Carolina, Air Force and Gardner-Webb), but Bob McClain was able to close this one.
Luckily for the Illini, they’re not graduating too much this year, so it gives a guy like Griffin who played at a small high school not to have to jump right in. But his Hudl tape is pretty impressive, and you can always use more bodies.
He doesn’t seemingly have a Twitter, so I’m not sure how we even found out about his commitment in the first place, but it’s a good move. Keep it up, Bob.
