Another big body in the trenches with high upside.

Signing day surprise!

Jerzhan Newton, a three-star defensive lineman from Clearwater, Florida, has flipped his commitment from Maryland to Illinois on the Early Signing Period’s first day.

Newton adds to a growing class for the defensive tackle rotation. His senior year was especially impressive, as he racked up over 30 tackles for loss and 16 sacks. Those are fantastic numbers for a defensive tackle at that level of Florida football.

Of all the defensive players we have taken, Newton might have the highest upside. On film he looks disruptive and strong at the point of attack. This might just end up being the best of the group when all is said and done.

He tweeted about Illinois just last week.

That came after he received an offer back in October.

He reminds me of a slimmer Corey Liuget. Big, unmovable, wreaking havoc. This is my favorite take in the class. A huge boost to the defensive front.
