Gregory Spann signs with Illinois

The QB room can never have enough talent.

Three-star dual-threat quarterback Gregory Spann signed with Illinois today after committing to the Illini last Friday, announcing his decision on Twitter.

The Saint Pete native also had offers from schools like Auburn and Central Florida, but likely sees an opening with the Illini after 2020 commit CJ Dixon decommitted earlier in the same day Spann committed.

247 Sports rates Spann as the 25th-best dual-threat QB in the 2020 class. The 6-foot-4, 194-pound QB plays at Lakewood High School.

Check out his highlights here:

Spann visited back in October.

Remember: the Illini still plan to have Brandon Peters, Matt Robinson, Isaiah Williams and Coran Taylor on next year’s team, plus Samari Collier is committed in the class of 2021. It’s a deep, deep room, but a relatively big QB like Spann will never hurt. Just more options for Rod Smith to tool with.

It does beg the question of what Smith does with so many QBs, and someone likely leaves, but until we see it, we won’t know. Spann sees an opportunity in the program, and after Peters, he’ll have as good a chance to compete as anyone.
