Cam Thomas was the only one.

And then he wasn’t.

Thomas, who was the only scholarship quarterback on the Illinois Football team during spring ball, was not named the starter in August, losing the job to graduate transfer AJ Bush. Now, Thomas has left the program, according to a press release.

Thomas was thrust into a starter role last season after injuries and disappointing campaigns for Chayce Crouch and Jeff George Jr. The true freshman played in four games (two starts) and competed 28 of 66 passes for 375 yards, with zero touchdowns and five interceptions.

Crouch retired from football in the offseason while George Jr. transferred to Michigan (and then Pitt), leaving Thomas as the only scholarship QB in the spring.

Then came a trio of freshmen and Bush, all who impressed the coaching staff and new offensive coordinator Rod Smith in different ways. Left out was Thomas.

We’ll update this story as we get more information.
