Shortly before kickoff, Illinois Football announced that Bennett Williams, Carmoni Green, Nate Hobbs, Louis Dorsey and Deon Pate have all been suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules.

All five are sophomores on the 2018 team, with much of them expected to be getting a substantial amount of playing time.

“If you break the team rules, there will be a consequence,” said head coach Lovie Smith. “It won’t be a death sentence.”

Hobbs, Dorsey, and Williams were expected to start the season with Pate and Green also getting plenty of playing time.

The team also announced that sophomore Larry Boyd and freshman Verdis Brown will redshirt the 2018 season.

Boyd started in nine games last season and was a BTN.com All-Big Ten Honorable Mention selection.
