Illinois cornerbacks coach Donnie Abraham resigned from the staff on Tuesday night, citing personal reasons.

The announcement was made via a tweet from Illini Football.

“Donnie informed me that he felt it was in his best interest to leave our staff,” head coach Lovie Smith said. “I fully support his decision and wish him the best moving forward. Our current coaching staff will absorb his responsibilities.”

For means of keeping consistency, it seems that the Illini will not currently replace the coaching role Abraham occupied since coming in the spring of 2017. Prior to coming to Champaign, Abraham was the defensive coordinator at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.

Defensive back is one of the strong suits for the Illini entering 2018, led by Bennett Williams, Tony Adams, Stanley Green and Nate Hobbs.

Illinois opens its 2018 season on Sept. 1 at home vs. Kent State.

The Champaign Room will update this story as more information becomes available.
