Illinois Softball Weekend Recap

A look back at how the Illini did this weekend, as well as a look ahead to tomorrow’s double header against Missouri.

Illinois Softball comes away from the Mississippi State weekend tournament with an 11-8 record on the season.

Game 1: Mississippi State 9, Illinois 5

In the first game of the double header, Emily Oestreich lasted just 1.1 innings, allowing 7 hits and 8 Earned Runs. The Illini offense tried their best to overcome this insurmountable lead, but ultimately a 4-4 day from Carly Thomas and a 2-hit performance from Sam Acosta were not enough to climb back.

Game 2: Mississippi State 12, Illinois 1

In game two of the double header, the Illini did not fare much better. Taylor Edwards allowed 8 H and 7 ER in 3.0 IP. The bats went cold, with Maddi Doane providing two of the five hits on the day for the Illini, who were swept in Friday’s double header.

Game 3: Illinois 11, UMass Lowell 0

Illinois found its luck against 2-9 UMass Lowell, with their bats waking up and Oestreich throwing a gem of a game. Oestreich threw the 13th no-hitter in Illinois history, working 6 innings of no-hit 8 K ball. Kate Giddens threw in a two-hit, four-RBI day, and Thomas drove in two runs to help solidify an Illini victory.

Game 4: Illinois 4, UMass Lowell 3

In the final game of the weekend, Illinois was able to narrowly walk away with another victory over UMass Lowell, bringing their weekend record even at 2-2. Edwards worked 3.2 innings of 7 hit, 3 ER ball, while Oestreich came in and finished the game, allowing 2 hits and striking out 4 in 3.1 innings. Leigh Farina went 2-3 and drove in one run.
