Matthew Robinson committed to the university only three days before the National Signing Day.

Matthew Robinson, out of San Juan Capistrano, California, didn’t appear to be on the Fighting Illini’s radar until new OC Rod Smith jumped aboard.

After an official visit with the university, Robinson announced his commitment on Feb. 4.

The smaller sized 6-foot-1 QB found plenty of success during his senior year at Serra Catholic High School and was originally committed to the University of Montana. Although, a coaching change there meant an opening in his recruitment.

Illinois, who comes in as weak in the QB department, swooped in to give Robinson his only power-five offer. His other offers came from Florida International University and Coastal Carolina University.
