Three-star defensive back Joseph Thompson officially signed with Illinois during the Early Signing Period on Wednesday.

Originally committed to Iowa State, Thompson flipped his commitment to Illinois in late April. He hails from Phillips Academy in Chicago.
Thompson is the 26th-best recruit in the state of Illinois and 124th-best cornerback in the nation, according to 247.
At 5-foot-10, 160 pounds, Illinois surely hopes to be able to give Thompson a year of growth in the program, hopefully redshirting him, but with the Illini’s struggles in the defensive backfield this season, don’t be surprised if he gets a few chances as a freshman in 2019.
Thompson is one of four Illinois commits from the state of Illinois currently in the 2019 class.
