Illini junior D.J. Williams to transfer

Swingman will have two years of eligibility left

Illinois forward D.J. Williams will transfer from the program, and he was given a full release, per a release from the University.

“After meeting with D.J., we came to the decision that a fresh start is in his best interest,” Illinois coach Brad Underwood said in a release. “We wish him success with the next chapter of his career.”

Williams averaged 2.3 points, 0.9 rebounds and 0.5 assists last season, though he appeared in just four games after Jan. 11 last year.

A four-star recruit out of Simeon, Williams never found consistent minutes in former coach John Groce’s rotation. Illinois’ roster is now dangerously guard-heavy, as only Leron Black, Michael Finke and Kipper Nichols, along with walk-on Cameron Liss, are the only forwards on the roster at this time.
