Former Mt. Carmel (Ill.) and current IMG Academy (Fla.) defensive back Houston Griffith is one of the top prospects in the country and perhaps the top prospect on Lovie Smith’s recruiting board in the 2018 cycle.
Additionally, Griffith is the son of former Illini fullback Howard Griffith. As an Illinois legacy, Griffith has always held the Illini in high regard, but has since landed offers from programs all over the country. Griffith lifted the hopes of Illinois fans everywhere when he announced earlier this month that he would be visiting Illinois again.
According to to 247Sports, Griffith was at Illinois throughout Saturday morning and later ventured to South Bend to check out Notre Dame. From the looks of it, both schools made a nice impression with the elite defensive back.
“Both are still very intriguing to me,” Griffith told 247Sports’ Steve Wiltfong ($).
“They both were good...Each school believes I can contribute, make an impact right away as a freshman.”
The direction in which the Illinois football program is heading under Lovie Smith is appealing to Griffith as well as the prospect of playing for the school he grew up being a friend of, but the bottom line is that Illinois will most likely have to win on the field to have a real shot at competing with the major programs vying to receive Griffith’s pledge. The good news for the Illini is that they have several things working in their favor with Griffith. All that’s left is performing on the field.
He holds offers from the likes of Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, UCLA, and USC, in addition to Illinois.
Griffith is listed as a four-star prospect and is ranked 48th overall in the class of 2018, according to the 247Sports Composite.
