With two remaining scholarships and most priority recruiting targets already off the board, National Signing Day was never going to be jam packed with news for Illinois. Still, Lovie Smith managed to make a few more surprise splashes early on Tuesday morning, with the biggest being a commitment from three-star defensive end Bobby Roundtree (FL). The 6-foot-5, 230-pound lineman was widely believed to be headed to Indiana prior to selecting the Orange and Blue.
According to 247Sports, Roundtree is the No. 1281 overall player in the class-of-2017. He boasted additional Power 5 scholarship offers from Louisville, Michigan State, Virginia Tech, Iowa State, Kansas State, Kentucky, Minnesota, Mississippi State, N.C. State, Oregon State, Rutgers, and Vanderbilt.
Bobby Roundtree Analysis (via Scout)
Roundtree is fairly raw and has to continue to work on developing some go-to moves, but possesses a great frame and undeniable size and length at the midpoint of his senior season. Roundtree is a smooth athlete that does a nice job of operating in space and chasing down the football, but has packed on noticeable mass in recent months as well. He plays with good discipline by setting the edge, breaking down and then striking his opponent with good pad level.
