Give us a time in the last five seasons when you EVER thought the Illinois Fighting Illini would have a higher ranked recruiting class than the 2014 College Football National Champions.
Uh huh. That’s what we thought.
Well Illini fans...believe it or not, Lovie Smith’s 2018 early signing day class has moved ahead of the Florida State Seminoles after announcing the addition of fifteen players to next year’s team on Wednesday. Smith’s highest ranked player joining the 2018 squad (so far) is Calvin Avery, a 6-foot-2, 310-pound defensive tackle who is listed as the 205th-best recruit in the country. The four-star recruit joins five other players primarily playing defense, with four of the six playing in the defensive secondary.
According to 247sports.com, that’s better than Florida State:

Feb. 7, 2018 is National Signing Day, and Illinois will be looking to add four-star prospects Luke Ford, Verdis Brown and Merlin Robertson to the upcoming class (to name a few).

***UPDATE 9:30AM 12/21/2017***
Things are back to normal. Florida State signed a 5 star recruit and has jumped to 44th on 247’s national list. Illinois has dropped a spot.
