For the third year in a row, the Illinois Fighting Illini are in the final match at the East Lake Cup in Atlanta, GA. In the three year history of the event, the Illini are the only team to have ever won it (2015 & 2016). This afternoon, Illinois looks to notch their third consecutive victory at the East Lake Cup against the top overall seeded Vanderbilt Commodores. Tee times begin at 11:55am CST, when sophomore Michael Feagles will lead the Illini off in the first group of the match.
The play of Michael Feagles in the semifinal match was the deciding factor in Illinois’ win over the defending national champion Oklahoma Sooners. Feagles defeated OU’s Brad Dalke in the final match of the semifinal to close out a 3-2 team victory. The win was not only a boost to Feagles’ confidence, but also some redemption as the Sooners were the team that eliminated the Illini from the final four of the NCAA tournament the prior season. Senior leaders Dylan Meyer and Nick Hardy were the other two winning matches in Tuesday’s semifinal victory.
Illinois faces Vanderbilt in today’s final match. The Commodores are the top overall seed in the event, having finished the stroke play round with the best combined team score of +4 (Illinois finished as the third seed at +13). After a surprising loss in the final four to the Oregon Ducks last season, Vandy is one of the national favorite headed into the 2018 spring season with a team ranking of 11th in the nation.
