Five-star PG Ayo Dosunmu commits to Illinois

Dosunmu is the Illini’s first commit in the class of 2018.

Five-star point guard Ayo Dosunmu committed to Illinois on Thursday night at the Jordan Store in Chicago.

Dosunmu is the first commitment in head coach Brad Underwood’s 2018 class.

The Chicago native also considered Wake Forest in his final two schools.

Dosunmu is listed on Rivals.com as 6-foot-4 and 185 pounds. He is one of the top point guards nationally and an early favorite to win Mr. Basketball in Illinois this season.

Dosunmu visited Illinois on Oct. 13 for an official visit and in June for an unofficial visit. He took an official visit to Wake Forest in late September.

The Morgan Park High School senior cut his list from seven schools to two last week.

Dosunmu could be the second-consecutive Mr. Illinois Basketball to commit to Illinois. Last year’s Mr. Basketball, Mark Smith, signed with the Illini and Underwood in April.

Without hyperbole, Dosunmu may be the biggest commitment Illinois has received since the early-2000s. He arguably solidifies Illinois into a national brand and gives them one of the top backcourts in the nation for the 2018-19 season with Dosunmu, Smith and current-freshman Trent Frazier.

The Illini are still in the conversation to receive a commitment from Simeon product Talen Horton-Tucker.

Former targets George Conditt (Iowa State), Landers Nolley (Georgia, then Virginia Tech), Colin Castleton (Michigan), and Elias Valtonen (Arizona State) committed elsewhere in October after considering Illinois among their final options.

Stay tuned as The Champaign Room analyzes Dosunmu’s commitment.
