With just hours to go before National Signing Day, Fighting Illini football has landed their second out-of-state prospect of the day. Via his Twitter account, three-star defensive back Dawson DeGroot (FL) has announced a verbal commitment to Illinois after decommitting from FIU earlier on Monday.
According to 247Sports, DeGroot is the No. 1578 overall prospect in the class-of-2017. The Florida native had additional scholarship offers from Air Force, Boston College, Central Michigan, Cincinnati, UConn, Florida Atlantic, Louisiana Tech, and Northern Illinois.
Very happy to announce that I'm committed to The University of Illinois!! pic.twitter.com/sodr1S3iAM— Dawson DeGroot (@DawsonDeGroot) February 1, 2017
According to Scout’s Corey Bender, DeGroot is a “savvy defender that shows good coverage awareness.” You can check out the rest of his brief scouting report at the bottom of this link.
The Orange and Blue also landed three-star DB Bennett Williams earlier this morning, meaning the total number of new defensive backs could be as many as six, depending on where certain athletes stick after training camp. Illinois still has two available scholarships to use on this recruiting class — expect them to try and add another defensive lineman and a punter.
