Illinois football’s 2017 recruiting class has received another addition. According to Illini Inquirer’s Jeremy Werner, three-star defensive back/linebacker James Knight (IL) has given a verbal commitment to the Fighting Illini. The East St. Louis product is currently rated as the No. 2039 overall prospect in the nation, and he held an additional scholarship offer from the Western Michigan Broncos.

Knight, a 6-foot/210-pound prospect, was a key piece of East St. Louis’ 7A IHSA State Title squad last Fall. Four-star WR Jeff Thomas (IL) was a member of the same team, and this latest news will presumably help out in Illinois’ pursuit of the star playmaker.
The Orange and Blue now have a total of 18 players lined up for National Signing Day. Knight is slated to join an incoming freshman class that features the likes of four-star DT Kendrick Green (IL), three-star DE Owen Carney (FL), and three-star CB Tony Adams (MO).
