Four-star DB Houston Griffith was one of the first 2018 players contacted by Illinois

Griffith is Illinois’ top target in the next recruiting class.

Starting at 12:00am local time on Thursday morning, college coaches were officially able to contact class-of-2018 recruits over the phone. One of the first players that the Fighting Illini staff reached out to was four-star defensive back Houston Griffith. The legacy recruit is rated as the No. 40 overall player in the country; he holds scholarship offers from just about every major program, including Ohio State, Michigan State, and Notre Dame.

Griffith, a former Mount Carmel (Chicago) standout, recently transferred to Florida's IMG Academy for his junior season. Having your top in-state prospect leave the area wasn’t exactly great news for Illinois, although recruiting at that prep school could present some opportunities with other talented players.

As for additional players to be contacted by the Orange and Blue last night, there isn’t much else to report from social media. Still, I imagine that four-star wide receiver Micah Jones (IL), four-star offensive lineman Verdis Brown (IL), four-star defensive end Devin O’Rourke (IL), and three-star quarterback Quincy Patterson (IL) were just a few of the other players to receive calls.
