Three-star wide receiver Cartrell Thomas narrows list, includes Illinois Football

The Texas native announced his top six schools on Sunday night.

Fighting Illini football is still in the race for three-star wide receiver Cartrell Thomas. The Texas native narrowed his list on Sunday to Illinois, Boise State, Colorado, Texas State, Texas Tech, and Utah. Thomas is the No. 829 overall player in 247Sports’ class-of-2017 composite rankings.

"First off I would like to thank God, my family, and coaches. I would like to thank all the coaches who have gave me a chance to play at their program. After talking it over with my family, these are the top six schools I will be looking into to further my education and football career. I will still be talking to other coaches who show interest in me. Thank God for all he has done for me."

Thomas has other scholarship offers from Bowling Green, Colorado State, Miami (OH), Nevada, New Mexico, North Texas, San Diego State, Tulane, and Tulsa.

When asked why he included the Fighting Illini on his list, Thomas told Scout that, "all [he] got from the coaches was love" during a satellite camp in Texas. The Lancaster high school standout previously conveyed a desire to take an official visit to Champaign in July, but it doesn’t appear that trip actually took place. So ideally the staff will be able to get him campus sometime before his high school season begins later this month.

Illinois already has two commitments at the position from in-state prospects Ricky Smalling and Kendall Smith. The Orange and Blue are looking to add a few more receivers, though, and Thomas figures to be up near the top of the wish list along with four-star Jeff Thomas and three-star Carmoni Green.
