Illinois will pay Central Michigan $1.15 million for the game.

Mike Granse-USA TODAY Sports

According to FBSchedules.com, the Illinois Fighting Illini have scheduled a future non-conference game against against Central Michigan. The single contest is currently slated for September 24, 2022 and will be played in Champaign at Memorial Stadium.

The Illini will pay the Chippewas a guaranteed $1.15 million for the game, according to a copy of the CMU contract that was obtained through a FOIA request.

Barring a chance meeting in a bowl game, this will be the first-ever football matchup between Illinois and Central Michigan. That's actually a bit surprising considering the relative proximity between the two programs.

Illinois will also play a home game against Virginia in 2022. That means there's only one more slot to fill since the Big Ten schedule is expanding to nine games beginning in 2016.

2022 Illinois Football Non-Conference Schedule

  • TBD
  • Virginia (9/10/22)
  • Central Michigan (9/24/22)
