It’s official — Jeremiah Tilmon will, in fact, be suiting up for the Illinois Fighting Illini next Winter. After a week-long saga of uncertainty and rumors, the five-star center again confirmed his original college choice during a ceremony on Thursday afternoon. Tilmon secretly submitted his National Letter of Intent on Wednesday in order to meet the deadline for college basketball’s early signing period.
Statement from John Groce:
"We are thrilled to officially welcome Jeremiah to the Illini family. He has been a top priority for our program for a number of years. Jeremiah has tremendous size, talent and skill. He is a dominant big with unlimited potential.
Jeremiah is one of the best frontcourt players in the country. He has everything you want at that position, he's skilled, a good scorer and passer, protects the rim, plays with toughness, and understands the game."
Tilmon previously informed Scout that he had no plans of signing with Illinois this week, so it’s unclear what exactly changed over the past few days. The lack of any further statement fueled speculation that the Illinois native was perhaps being enticed to join former Illini target Jordan Goodwin at St. Louis University.
But those rumors luckily proved to be baseless, and the Fighting Illini have now managed to secure their highest-rated recruit of the John Groce era. Overall, the program’s current four-man recruiting class is ranked No. 10 in the nation by 247Sports. Groce has a press conference scheduled for 2:30pm CT to officially introduce the group.
