College Football Rankings Week 3: Illinois gains more votes in Coaches Poll

There was a lot of shakeup amongst the Top 25 this weekend. Was Illinois able to sneak into the Top 25?

Mike Granse-USA TODAY Sports

Michigan State put on an impressive display Saturday night against Oregon for the country to see, Ohio State rolled over Hawaii and managed to use both Barrett and Jones in the first half, and Harbaugh got his first win in Ann Arbor against Oregon State and Minnesota came back to beat Colorado State in overtime -- it was definitely a strong weekend for the Big Ten.

But the opposite was true for the SEC. Auburn nearly lost to Jacksonville State, Toledo upset No. 18 Arkansas, and Tennessee dropped a home game to Oklahoma. The rest of the top five teams in the nation were able to hold their ground this week, but there was a lot of shifting beneath them after a wild week two.

But the story of this week's rankings (from our perspective, of course) is that Illinois continues to climb up the 'others receiving votes' list. According to the Coaches Poll, the Illini are the No. 5 team in the Big Ten behind Ohio State, Michigan State, Wisconsin, and Northwestern (!!).
