Mike LaTulip will redshirt the 2015-16 season

The Illinois walk-on will redshirt the upcoming season.

Mike Granse-USA TODAY Sports

According to CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein, Illinois senior Mike LaTulip will redshirt the 2015-16 season. LaTulip, who's expected to graduate next May, was promoted from walk-on to scholarship player in January. While receiving extremely limited playing time (about 2.6 MPG), the 6'1 guard shot 46.2% from the field and 44.4% from behind the arch.

LaTulip, obviously, had a scholarship for the second semester, but it's unlikely that he'll be retaining it going forward; the reason he was 'promoted' in the first place was because Illinois didn't fill the final roster spot with a mid-year transfer. This news comes as somewhat of a surprise, but it makes complete sense for LaTulip. After graduating, he could potentially transfer to another program where he'd be immediately eligible for a fifth season.

UPDATE:

It appears that LaTulip will, indeed, transfer after the upcoming season.
