The Big Ten Conference announced on Monday morning that David Kerian has been named the Big Ten Player of the Week. The senior first baseman batted .636 (7-for-11) in a series sweep of No. 23 Ohio State this weekend. He also recorded three hits, three RBI, and a pair of runs against the Buckeyes in the series finale on Sunday. This is Kerian's first career Player of the Week honor.
This is the second straight week in which an Illini has earned the award; senior outfielder Casey Fletcher won last week after batting .500 and drawing four walks.
In addition to Kerian, Matt Portland (Northwestern) was named Pitcher of the Week and Luis Alvarado (Nebraska) was named Freshman of the Week.
The No. 6 Fighting Illini (40-6-1) will look to extend their program record 21-game winning streak this weekend as they host a three game series against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (15-31-1).
