Welcome to a new series: TCR Athletes of the Week. Each week this series will serve as The Champaign Room's post to award a male and female Illini athlete recognition for exemplary excellence in their sport.
In this first installment, Brian Campbell (Golf) and Josh Ferguson (Football) share the male honors, while Jannelle Flaws (Soccer) takes the female accolade.
The senior right-hander earned medalist honors by three strokes over teammate Charlie Danielson to lead the Illini Golf team to a 30-shot victory over Florida at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate over the weekend. Campbell shot a 209 (70-69-70).
The junior tailback led the Illini ground attack with 190 yards and three touchdowns, two on the ground and one through the air, in a 42-35 rain delayed win over Texas State at Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Ferguson scored a touchdown in the first three quarters, including the first play from scrimmage with a 75 yard run. He scored from two yards out before halftime and hauled in Wes Lunt's pass for a 33 yard score in the third quarter.
Ferguson caught four passes for 43 yards and ran for 233 all-purpose yards.
The senior forward scored five goals to lead the Illini soccer team to two Big Ten wins at Illini SoccerFest this week. Flaws scored two goals, one in each half, on free kicks just outside the box in a 2-0 win over Indiana on Tuesday. She followed up that performance with a hat trick after the 80th minute mark in a 3-0 victory over Purdue on Sunday afternoon. The Glenbrook South product has a team-high 11 goals in just 10 games this season.
