The Fighting Illini men's golf team won by over 30 shots, the soccer team posted two shutouts, and the volleyball team captured the Creighton Classic tournament title. We bring you the results of the last week's Illini match-ups.
Men's Golf
The No. 6 Illini improved to 2-0 with a 30-shot victory over Florida at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate over the weekend. Senior Brian Campbell earned medalist honors by three strokes over teammate Charlie Danielson. The Illini finished at 7-over 859 at the par-71 course. The two Illinois golfers were the only competitors to finish under par. Illinois junior Thomas Detry tied for fourth at 5 over and five Illini placed in the top 20, including freshmen Nick Hardy and Dylan Meyer.
Women's Golf
Head coach Renee Slone's team shot a 920 for 10th place at the Minnesota Invitational at the Minikahda Club in Minneapolis, Minnesota from Sept. 15-16. Sophomore Stephanie Miller led the Illini with a 228 (78-72-78) and tied for 21st, while freshman Cayanid (Jan) Prapassarangkul was the only other Illini to card an even-par round with a score of 230 (80-72-78) to tie for 30th.
Soccer
The No. 22 Illini posted back-to-back shutouts against Indiana and Purdue at Illini SoccerFest this weekend to improve to 8-2 on the season. Head coach Janet Rayfield's team now has six shutouts this year. All five goals scored this week came from senior Jannelle Flaws, including three after the 80th minute against Purdue.
Volleyball
The No. 16 Illini finished nonconference play with a 3-0 victory over South Dakota to capture the Creighton Classic title. With the victory in straight sets (25-18, 25-15, 25-22), the Illini finished 8-3 in nonconference action on Saturday.
The Illini started the tournament with a 3-1 (25-15, 25-20, 24-26, 25-22) victory over host Creighton on Friday, and they followed with another 3-1 (25-23, 25-12, 18-25, 25-21) decision over Colorado at Huff Hall.
Cross-Country teams
Both men's and women's cross-county teams were not in action this week, and will race next at the Roy Griak Invite on Sept. 27 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Men's Tennis
The Illini finished with a 14-7 record during the three-day Fighting Illini Invitational at the Olympia Field Country Club this weekend. They went 11-5 in singles play and 3-2 in doubles competition. Junior Jared Hiltzik and senior Tim Kopinski remained undefeated in doubles action with a 8-2 win over Covalschi/Schnurrenberge of Notre Dame.
