Illinois did not play a great first game this past weekend. It was ugly against an FCS team, but it was a win. So we move forward cautiously, but overall still happy because hey, we're one win closer to a bowl game.
Northwestern did not play a great first game this past weekend. While it was not against an FCS school, it was against a team that went 1-11 last year. For three quarters they were mauled and seemed completely without a gameplan for a team they've literally had months to prepare against. Which is why it's pretty damn hilarious that Pat Fitzgerald had no idea that the California Golden Bears had a running quarterback on their roster.
But the best part is this absolutely wonderful quote
Unbelievable job by their bloggers and beat writers — lesson learned — not reporting that throughout all of camp because they did a great job with the element of surprise.
There just aren't words for it. A grown man, whose job literally relies upon watching tape and analyzing opposing rosters for strengths and weaknesses had no idea that his opening opponent might scramble because the bloggers and beat writers never said so.
This summer has been magical because Fitzy absolutely can't stop saying stupid things. As a fanbase that knows what it's like having your coach implode during press conferences and become an easy media punchline, I am thrilled to see this happening to the most insufferable head coach in the conference. Keep up the good work, my man.
