When A.D. Miller committed last night, the more optimistic parts of the fan base (myself included) began to wonder if this would possibly mean his friend and fellow giant Texas high school receiver Sam Mays would be joining the fold as well. With the coaching staff hinting at it and Dre Brown recruiting on Twitter, signs were definitely pointing towards yes. Those predictions came true this afternoon.
Mays is now the 12th commit in the 2015 class and the second wide receiver. He's 6'3.5", so when paired with Miller (6'4") opposing defensive backs are going to have a rough time handling that much height. Mays chose the Illini over offers from Brigham Young, Fresno State, Houston, Louisiana Tech, Memphis, and North Texas.
What's more exciting than his offers list is what his commitment means to this recruiting class though. According to 247's composite rankings, Mays is the 3rd best commit in this class behind only Gabe Megginson and Dre Brown. With only one defensive commit, this batch is already 36th in the nation and 8th in the conference. We're now right behind Michigan on both lists. That's not a bad place to be. This kind of positive recruiting momentum is always fun and let's hope it starts carrying over to the other side of the team as well.
