Safety Patrick Nelson Commits To Illinois

Another top-15 recruit from the state of Illinois joins the Fighting Illini.

Bruce Thorson-USA TODAY Sports

Woop woop!

Following in the footsteps of Gabe Megginson, Dre Brown, and Jimmy Fitzgerald before him, Patrick Nelson of Chicago committed to the Illini today.

Nelson is a safety with a little bit of muscle on him, coming in at five-foot-eleven and just a shade under 200 pounds. For those of you who really dig them crootin' ratings, Nelson is a three-star recruit and the 15th best prospect in the state of Illinois per the 247Composite. Rivals is particularly high on him, listing him as the tenth best in-state prospect.

Bottom line, this dude is pretty darn good, certainly a nice recruit for the Illini. His size makes me think he would be capable of playing STAR for the Illini one day, but obviously we're a long way from thinking about that. He is the first commit of the 2015 class to play on the defensive side of the ball. That's probably a good thing--I'm pretty sure you need to field a defense to play football.

Nelson had offers from Buffalo, Nevada, Northern Illinois, and Indiana. Nelson received his offer from the Illini just yesterday and was originally scheduled to decide this Friday, so clearly he's excited about coming to Champaign.

For now, just be happy and revel in our continued success. Two commits this past week!
