According to Jeff Johnson, a contributor at 247Sports, Wes Lunt has taken an early lead in the race to be Illinois' starting quarterback in 2014:
They won't go public with it but Lunt is the QB as we all have thought and they are expecting big things from him.
Biggest thing I took away from my talk was how impressed veteran coaches on the defensive side of the ball have been with Lunt, his accuracy, leadership during the season and off season. Too much of a buildup or spin? Don't know but lots of excitement about the QB Lunt this off season.
Wes Lunt is already the presumed starter, but this report is certainly a nice bit of extra information. If Lunt truly is everything Bill Cubit wants in a prototypical pocket passer, I doubt Reilly O'Toole and Aaron Bailey have much of a chance to steal the starting spot. Although they still have time to prove themselves, this report indicates that the transfer is winning the job through excellence, as opposed to having it fall to him for lack of competition.
Jeff Johnson also goes over the early coach evaluations of a few more Illini within that same forum thread, including JUCO DL Joe Fotu and WRs Malik Turner and Geronimo Allison, if you're hungering for more football news.
