Former Illinois cornerback Vontae Davis named to Pro Bowl

1 former Illini earns Pro Bowl honors

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Former Illinois cornerback Vontae Davis has been named to the 2015 Pro Bowl, the NFL announced Tuesday.

It's his first Pro Bowl honor.

Davis, 26, leads the league with a passer rating of 39.1 when opposing quarterbacks throw against him and has not allowed a touchdown in 786 snaps this season. He ranks second with 19 pass deflects and tied for seventh with four interceptions.

Davis beat out Perrish Cox from the San Francisco 49ers, who has more inceptions than Davis, but he doesn't have the shutdown skills as Davis.

Davis played three seasons for the Illini before forgoing his senior season for the 2009 NFL draft. He recorded 56 tackles, including 13 in the Rose Bowl against USC, and was tied for third in the Big Ten with four interceptions.

The Pro Bowl will take place on Jan. 25 at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. Super Bowl XLIV will be played on the same field seven days later. Having scrapped the AFC vs. NFC format, Hall of Famers Michael Irvin and Cris Carter will coach the opposing teams.
