Welcome to a new series: TCR Athletes of the Month. Each month this series will serve as The Champaign Room's post to award a male and female Illini athlete recognition for exemplary excellence in their sport over the course of a month.
For September, Jannelle Flaws (soccer) and Jocelynn Birks (volleyball) earned weekly female honors and Brian Campbell (golf), Josh Ferguson (football) and Aleks Vukic (tennis) took male weekly honors. Flaws and Campbell emerged from the pack to win the TCR September honor.
Jannelle Flaws
Flaws scored 11 goals in September and has 14 so far this season. The senior forward scored all five goals for the Illini last week, including two goals against Ohio St. to become the first Illini to record multiple goals in four consecutive games. She also notched her third career hat trick against Purdue during the month, Flaws has scored 34 in 33 games since last season and only trails East Tennessee State's Hannah Short by two this season for the national lead. The fourth-place all-time goal scorer for the Illini, only trails Vanessa DiBernardo (43), Emily Brown (46) and Tara Hurless (47).
Brian Campbell
Campbell earned medalist honors by three strokes over teammate Charlie Danielson to lead the Illini Golf team to a 30-shot victory over Florida at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate Invitational in September. The senior right-hander shot a 209 (70-69-70) during the tournament and is ranked the No. 6 golfer in the nation by Golf Week. He was previously ranked No. 3, but with the Illini off the greens this past weekend other golfers moved up.
