The Weekend in B1G: Week Three

The B1G went 9-3 over the weekend, with two ranked teams losing.

David Purdy

I personally hate that the B1G doesn't start conference play until week five. When the B1G goes to 14 teams, I'd love an SEC type schedule. Having a entire month of non-conference games just isn't too much fun.

Except when Michigan almost loses to Akron. That is very fun indeed.

Michigan (3-0) 28 Akron 24

Michigan needed a late fourth quarter score to beat the Zips. It seems it was hungover from its great win over Notre Dame. The Wolverines are playing UConn on the road next week, so they will need a much better performance.

Minnesota (3-0) 29 Western Illinois 12

Jerry Kill suffered another seizure during the game, his third while the coach of the Gophers. The team has dealt with it before, and they know it can happen, but it's still very scary.

The team was down 12-7 to Western early in the first quarter, but they were able to rally the troops and win the game 29-12.

Michigan State (3-0) 55 Youngstown State 17

The Spartan's offense scored seven touchdowns in this game, after only collecting two in the first two games. Sure it was against a bad team, but the teams they were playing in the first two games weren't great either.

Iowa (2-1) 27 Iowa State 21

Iowa won the yearly battle for the Cy-Hawk Trophy. The Hawkeyes ran the ball 60 (60!) times for 218 yards, while holding the Cyclones to 59 yards on 24 carries. Having such a large advantage in the rushing game usually points to a win. It did for Iowa as they broke their two game losing streak against their in-state rivals.

Notre Dame 31 Purdue (1-2) 24

The Boilers played the Irish very tough. I'm not sure if this says more about Purdue or Notre Dame at this point.

Arizona State 32 Wisconsin (2-1) 30

Wisconsin finally played a real team, and they lost.

The ending was crazy.

It sucks to suck.

Ohio State (3-0) 52 California 34

No Braxton Miller, no problem. Kenny Guiton played very well for the Buckeyes. They will need Braxton Miller back to win the Big Ten this season, but it's nice for them to know they have a good option to back him up.

UCLA 41 Nebraska (2-1) 21

The Huskers were up 18 at home at one point, before they completely collapsed. They gave up 28 points in the third quarter and the Bruins ran away with it.

Maybe Nebraska can "whiteshirt" this defense?

Indiana (2-1) 42 Bowling Green 12

Now that's how you are supposed to play an inferior opponent, Indiana. The Hoosier defense played well this week, but it will remain the biggest area of concern for this team in Big Ten play. It may be bad enough to keep this team from going bowling, much like Illinois.

Central Florida 34 Penn State (2-1) 31

This is a bit of a shock, but Central Florida has a solid program. Penn State was down 31-17 going into the 4th, and ran out of time and couldn't complete the comeback. The Lions gave up over 200 rushing yards in this game, which is never a good sign.

The best news from this game, the Knights have a running back named Storm Johnson. Great name, though it would fit better on a defender.

Northwestern (3-0) 38 Western Michigan 17

They didn't beat the spread, that means that lost, right? RIGHT!?!

I'm getting really sick of Northwestern being so damn good at football. The NURDS need to go back to studying.
