Deadspin went ahead and did some research to find out that of the 50 states in the United States the highest paid state employee in 27 of them is the football coach at the largest state school. Illinois is one of those 27 states.
Yes, thanks to his base salary of $1.6 million, Tim Beckman is the highest-paid state employee in Illinois. I'm going to go ahead and guess that at $1.4 million John Groce comes in second.
A fact I do not begrudge either man for.
It's not Tim Beckman or John Groce's fault that we're a society that pays coaches and athletes -- if we pay the athletes at all! -- more than we do teachers, it's our own. So I'm not going to hate the player, and frankly I don't even hate the game all that much either. In fact, I love the game.
Without this game I'm stuck at a job I hate.
Go game!
