Tonight 2012 will be put to rest and we will enter 2013. And nothing should make Illinois fans happier.
I've only been doing this blog since late October, but that's a good thing. Had I been forced to blog about the first ten months of the season in Illinois sports I may not have made it this far. That's because the year of 2012 was one of the worst years -- if not the worst -- in Illinois sports history.
Now, keep in mind, when I say Illinois sports I mean football and basketball. The revenue sports. I mean no disrespect to our women's basketball, tennis, golf, soccer or baseball teams, but the fact of the matter is that this blog spends the overwhelming majority of its time focusing on the two big dogs.
That is unless one of our female soccer players pulls out something like this.
But as far as football and basketball are concerned, 2012 can go to hell. How bad was the year? Well, here's a stat that should make your eyes bleed.
In 2012 Illinois football and men's basketball played 42 separate contests. In those 42 games the Illini won 20 times. That's a winning percentage of .476. However, it gets much worse.
If you take away the basketball team's start to this current 13-1 season, that goes down to 7 victories in 29 games. That's it. The Illini finished last season 5-12 in basketball and went 2-10 in football. That's a .241 winning percentage.
That's fucking terrible.
What the Mayans were to predicting the end of the world, we were to college athletics in 2012.
So get the hell out of here, 2012. And don't come back.
