It's Finally Over

The Illini did not pull off the upset and lost to the Northwestern Wildcats 50-14, going winless in the Big Ten this season.

Well, this was certainly something. Illinois lost 50-14 to Northwestern today.

Thirteen weeks ago, the weather was beautiful (at least here in Kansas). We were all happy. The football season was starting and we were all optimistic. Hell, we even won our first challenge against what was supposed to be a pretty decent Western Michigan squad.

And that was the highlight of the season.

Today was potentially the worst Illini game I've watched in recent memory. I don't think I've ever seen the players look less like they gave a damn about what was happening out there. Four turnovers. Eight penalties, including the hilarity of Tim Beckman running into an official and giving free yards to Northwestern.

There is no discipline. There is no excitement. There sure as hell isn't any fighting spirit out there. This is a team that quit halfway through the season. It's going to be a very long winter for these boys. One of the offensive coordinators will be fired. If I was pressed to guess, I'd say Billy Gonzalez gets axed.

Something has to give. Thanks for hanging out with us this season. I wish I had nicer things to say.
